DAMA/R&D Set-up

This general purpose low background set-up has also been used for test measurements on R&D prototypes.

Several R&D's to realize radiopure detectors and PMTs have been performed and other are in progress at present. Among them we remind:

  • the initial efforts for developing low radioactive NaI(Tl) since beginning of '90 with Harshaw/Quartz-Silice co. (ended)
  • R&D-I for highly radiopure NaI(Tl) with Crismatec co. (materials selections and protocols); it allowed the realization of the ~ 100 kg DAMA/NaI set-up (ended)
  • the R&D with EMI-Thorn co. that allowed the realization of our low background B53/FL photomultipliers (ended)
  • the R&D with Bicron co. for the realization of radiopure CaF2(Eu) (ended)
  • R&D-II with Crismatec co. (materials selections, physical/chemical radiopurification of the powders and protocols) for further radiopurification of NaI(Tl); it has allowed the realization of the new ~ 250 kg highly radiopure DAMA/LIBRA set-up (ended)
  • the R&D with Electron Tubes lmt. to realize higher radiopure PMTs (ended)
  • the R&D with Ukraine companies to develop radiopure ZnWO4 (ended/ further foreseen)
  • the R&D with Ukraine companies to develop radiopure CdWO4 with Cd enriched in 106Cd (ended/ further foreseen)
  • the R&D with Ukraine companies to develop radiopure CdWO4 with Cd enriched in 116Cd (ended/ further foreseen)
  • the R&D made by HAMAMATSU for higher Q.E. low background PMTS (ended)
  • R&D-III towards possible DAMA/1ton (DAMA proposed already in 1996) (in progress)
