Scientific motivation:

We plan an informal workshop with sufficient time to maximize intense discussion. There will be two focussed general large discussions and rather long discussion periods after each talk. The informal character of the talks will be encouraged; presentations which are partly tutorial, given the mixed character of the audience, are most welcome.
The workshop  will continue, on the line of the workshops held in 1997, in 1998, and in 1999, in the effort of establishing links between scientists of different backgrounds:
density functional, many-body, nuclear physics and quantum chemists' approaches, in order to assess the present status of the computation of excitation spectra, and in order to strengthen the growing exchange and merging of the traditionally different communities. The increased interest of many, often experimental, groups for a reliable description of electronic spectroscopy is a strong motivation for our effort in this direction. We believe that the very intense, informal and continuous discussion which has been possible in this series of workshops contributes to the formation of a strong community.
